In 1977 Leonard and Sarah Jane Servinski purchased 80 acres on Eastman Road in Larkin Township, which was then known as the McKay Farm. The land was originally owned by Dr.McKay, a well-known Midland dentist, who pastured beef cattle on the property in the early 1900′s. Leonard and Sarah Jane had a vision of building a nursery and garden center on this property. Their children noted that a cluster of several large maple trees on a small hill was the nicest feature of the future location, and so it was decided that the new nursery would be called Maple Hill.
The land was cleared and developed, and the business grew rapidly with the original building being expanded several times during the 1970’s and 1980’s. The retail store was added during the late 1980’s and Maple Hill became a source for outdoor power equipment and an ever-expanding specialty nursery and garden center. After graduating from college in 1989, Chuck, the oldest son, officially joined the business, having worked alongside his father from a young age. Parents and son formed a corporation and continued to grow the business.
The late 1990’s once again brought change as a total renovation of the nursery and garden center was completed to offer customers a wider selection of quality nursery plants, as well as statuary, outdoor furniture, and other unique garden items. An expansion of the retail store was completed in the fall of 2011 to once again expand the offering of quality garden accessories and Christmas merchandise.
Today Maple Hill Nursery covers 12 acres with a 10,000 sq. ft. retail store and offers a wide range of trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials as well as outdoor furniture, lawn and garden equipment, garden accessories and supplies. Maple Hill also offers residential and commercial landscaping services. Len, Chuck, and Chuck’s wife, Michelle, are all active in the business today. In 2017, the Servinski’s will celebrate 40 years in business at this location.
