With the wet weather we have experienced the last few weeks, mushrooms of all types are
popping up in the landscape. Not only are they unsightly but they can present a risk to pets and
children.
Why do they grow??
Mushrooms appear in lawns and flower beds when we have wet conditions and the soil is rich
in organic matter under the soil. They help break down organic matter in the soil and turn it
into nutrients that your lawn can use. Dead grass and leaves as well as excessive thatch in a
lawn will also make mushrooms thrive. They spread via spores.
How to get rid of them?
You can spray a fungicide to try and kill mushrooms. It probably won’t kill them directly but will
help control the fungi growing beneath the soil. You can also take a shovel and dig them out
and discard them but eventually they will die off and dissipate by seeing out their life cycle.
